After protracted negotiations, Sony is now the full owner of Sony BMG, having paid former partner Bertelsmann Media Group $1.2 billion to buy out its 50% stake. The company will be renamed as Sony Music Entertainment, and will sit within Sony’s North American division. Sony says it’ll be able to better integrate music with its other divisions, or as CEO Howard Stringer puts it, “to achieve a deeper and more robust integration between the wide-ranging global assets of the music company and Sony’s products, operating companies and affiliates”. Let’s hope Sony’s famous internal politics don’t get in the way of that grand ambition.
