Okay, so it seems yesterday’s reports that MTV has banned WMG artists from its Rock Band games isn’t quite true. Instead, Billboard says it’s more of a stalemate situation, where WMG is demanding higher licensing fees from MTV to use its artists’ tracks, and MTV is refusing to pay them. So rather than ban WMG artists, MTV has simply “stopped requesting new licenses until both parties can resolve the licensing dispute”. WMG artists like Belly, Jane’s Addiction and The Grateful Dead are still being added, but as the result of previously-signed licensing deals – the pipeline will dry up soon. Billboard notes that this Rock Band impasse can be filed alongside WMG’s decision to pull its videos from YouTube just before Christmas.
