Facebook has announced some significant changes to its website, some of which have direct relevance for music marketing. There’s now no distinction between personal profiles and public fan pages – and fan pages will now have a similar format, with tabs for Wall, Info and Boxes. Artists who have fan pages will be able to publish status updates just like regular Facebook users, with those showing up in their fans’ news feeds as if they were a friend. It’s being seen as an attempt by Facebook to fend off competition from Twitter as the most popular way for bands to communicate directly with fans.
