Digital distributor WaTunes has announced that it’s making its service completely free for artists who want to get their music onto digital stores. “As of now, WaTuns will enable its customers to continue to sell unlimited music, earn 100% of the royalties, and more, ALL FOR FREE! There are no fees, cancellations, no gimmicks,” says an excitable post on the company’s blog. So how will it make any money? CEO Kevin Rivers tells TechCrunch that WaTunes plans to launch a music-based social network bringing together artists and fans – sound familiar? – with its own storefront and advertising as the main revenue source. In other words, WaTunes wants to attract lots of artists through its generous distribution terms, in order to give its new social network a headstart.
