The analysts have been making their predictions for the development of the smartphone market, and they’re characteristically bullish. Informa reckons that by 2013, 38% of all handsets sold will be smartphones, and points out that in 2008, nearly 162 million smartphones were sold – overtaking laptops for the first time. Informa also says that Android handsets will be outselling iPhones by 2012 – an unsurprising prediction, given that there will be many Android phones from different manufacturers. Rival analyst Juniper disagrees on smartphone penetration, though, saying that by 2013 only 23% of handset sales will be smartphones. Which is still a whopping 300 million units.
