Who knew that Discovery Communications had patents for e-book reader technology? We thought they just made those nice documentaries about leopards. But the media company behind Discovery Channel and Animal Planet is suing Amazon for patent infringement, citing a patent obtained by Discovery for “Electronic Book Security and Copyright Protection System”, including a “portable book-shaped viewer”. As VentureBeat points out, if Discovery does win the case, the damages it’s awarded should bring out into the open how many Kindles have been sold – a figure Amazon has kept close to its chest thus far.
