Bad news for UK fans of the Birdsong digital radio station, which has been broadcasting, yes, birdsong round the clock for nearly 18 months. It’s now been shut down, to be replaced by a new station playing indie, urban, rock and jazz from unsigned artists. Birdsong was only ever meant as a way to fill the empty airwaves after the OneWord DAB station closed down, but it picked up a listenership of nearly half a million, making it one of the most successful digital radio stations in the UK. The problem, of course, was the difficulty of selling any ads.
