Singer-songwriter Richard Marx has strongly criticised the scale of the damages awarded against file-sharer Jammie Thomas-Rasset last week, blaming labels for their past strategies to “ream the consumer and fill their pockets”. Why is this worth reporting? Marx’s ”Now and Forever” was one of the 24 tracks that Thomas-Rasset was convicted for sharing. “Holding Ms. Thomas-Rasset accountable for the continuing daily actions of hundreds of thousands of people is, at best, misguided and at worst, farcical,” he writes. “Her accountability itself is not in question, but this show of force posing as judicial come-uppance is clearly abusive.”
