Google has announced that it’s using its Chrome web browser as the basis for a new operating system for netbooks – cheap, lightweight laptops used mainly for surfing the web and communications. The company says the first netbooks running the OS will be available in the second half of 2010. “We’re designing the OS to be fast and lightweight, to start up and get you on the web in a few seconds,” says the company in a blog post announcing the news.”The user interface is minimal to stay out of your way, and most of the user experience takes place on the web.” Developers can make web apps that will run on the netbook – something streaming music sites will undoubtedly be interested in.
