Pandora may be pleased with the newly-agreed webcasting royalty rates, but web radio aggregator Live365 has come out swinging against the new rates – and specifically the fact that even small online radio stations must pay an annual $25,000 fee to SoundExchange. Live365 boss Johnie Floater says many of the 6,000 stations that broadcast through his platform can’t afford it. “I’m sorry but much as I like Armenian folk, it’s never going to be a million dollar business,” he says, by way of an example. “Does that mean it shouldn’t be on the internet? No.” Instead, Live365 wants to be able to to negotiate a deal on behalf of its stations.
