Universal Music Group Distribution has announced a strategic alliance with digital distributor TuneCore, which will initially involve the latter creating and managing distribution portals for UMG’s labels. In return, UMGD says it will provide TuneCore’s customers with licensing opportunities and “professional audio mastering”. Oh, and as part of the deal, UMGD gets access to more than 200 Guitar Center shops in the US, as the retail chain is one of TuneCore’s investors. “Honestly, Universal is one of the most forward thinking record labels on the planet,” says TuneCore boss Jeff Price. “With this deal UMGD has truly changed the rules and the major label model by providing true choice for a musician.”
