UK mobile operator Orange has unveiled a service called Monkey, which streams music to users’ mobiles via voice calls rather than over the data network. Targeted at 16-24 year-olds on pay-as-you-go tariffs, its exclusive partner is Universal Music Group. Users can dial in and listen to preset playlists, or create their own playlists on the Monkey website, which can then also be accessed from their phones. Orange is hoping to get a bigger share of the prepay youth market, UMG gets a fee per subscriber, and UK broadcaster Channel 4 is also on board for marketing and editorial purposes.
