On the face of it, claims by Tokyo market research firm BCN that Sony’s Walkman music players outsold Apple’s iPods in Japan in the last week of August are excellent news for Sony. The firm’s survey claims Walkmans took a 43% market share that week, compared to iPods’ 42.1%. However, the problem is that the survey doesn’t include iPhone sales, which given the iPhone 3GS is currently the best-selling mobile phone in Japan, is a pretty big flaw.
