Universal Music Group may be bullish about UK ISP Virgin Media’s plans for an unlimited MP3 download service, but a report in New Media Age suggests that EMI and Sony Music remain unconvinced by the business model – and specifically that they fear it will cannibalise their iTunes sales. “We want to work with Virgin Media as a partner, but any deal has to sit comfortably with how we value our assets against how it values its customers,” says one label exec involved in the negotiations. The service would be significantly less appealing to Virgin’s customers if it doesn’t have all four majors on board at launch.
