As users of Spotify’s free service, we received an email yesterday from the company encouraging us to upgrade to a Premium subscription. Which is unsurprising. But the interesting aspect is that it was offering us a quid off the £9.99 monthly subscription for six months, thanks to a deal with car insurance firm Swiftcover. It’s the latest example of Spotify finding someone else to subsidise premium subscriptions, albeit to less of an extent than mobile operators like 3 bundling the full cost into a monthly mobile tariff. Meanwhile, UK users of the ad-funded version are being startled by a new advert from the Conservative Party slamming “Gordon Brown’s reckless spending”. Just the thing for that Red Wedge playlist…
