There have been intense rumours recently that Google was working on a dedicated ‘GooglePhone’ – an Android handset customised up to the eyeballs with the company’s services, and branded as Google rather than as a manufacturing partner. Google confirmed it this weekend, saying it was being distributed to Google staff as a “dogfooding” initiative (as in ‘eating your own dogfood’). However, TechCrunch has more details: the handset is made by HTC, called the Nexus One, and will go on sale in January as an unlocked device rather than through specific operators.
