IDC says Nokia took a 38.9% share of the global smartphone market in 2009 with 67.7 million sales. Research In Motion was in second place with 34.5 million sales – a 19.8% share – followed by Apple’s 25.1 million (14.4%). HTC (8.1m sales and a 4.6% share) and Samsung (5.7 million – 3.3%) were next. Overall, IDC estimates that 174.2 million smartphones were sold in 2009.
