UK public broadcasting giant the BBC has announced that it will release three apps for mobile devices. The first two, for the iPhone, are a news app and a sports app. The third is expected to be an iPlayer app (currently iPlayer is available for the iPhone only via the Safari web browser.) Already there are signs that the BBC is coming down on third party app developers who make software based on the BBC’s content: yesterday the BBC placed a cease-and-desist order on Manchester based app developer Camiloo, which had publicised an iPlayer app that it claimed was under approval by Apple. The BBC apps will be free in the UK and ad-supported abroad, except the iPlayer app which is expected to be unavailable outside the UK. Source
