An interview with Tim Westergren, boss of US streaming service Pandora, lifts the lid on a range of statistics about the radio site, which remains blocked for UK users. Pandora is now on 40 million users and USD $50 million of revenue – but royalties to rightsholders amount to $30 million. The equation means that after ten years in business Pandora finally took its first profitable quarter last year. Compare this to recent claims from Spotify boss Daniel Ek that Spotify could potentially be worth “tens of billions” “in a few years” and you’ll see that valuing digital music companies is not an exact science.
