Toy firm Mattel is getting more into music, with plans to launch a Barbie-themed music portal next year. That’s according to Katrina McMullan, senior counsel for music and entertainment at Mattel. She was speaking at Billboard’s Music & Money Symposium, and explaining why the company has moved away from traditional artist sponsorships. “What cost me a million dollars two years ago doesn’t cost that anymore. Only about five artists are in that [top-tier] category that can command that kind of money.” McMullan also said that Mattel is launching a new product this Autumn for which it will license a theme song – which if successful will lead to other such licensing deals for future products.
