Bruce Houghton at Hypebot has penned a thoughtful piece on what’s happening with Amazon’s Daily Deal promotion since Apple started pressing labels not to participate. “Gone are most of the new hit makers,” he writes. “There are a fraction of the one day exclusives that there were just a month ago.” This, despite the fact that according to labels, Amazon’s subsidised promotion could boost first-week sales of an album by up to 20% – and that as much as 95% of the heavily-discounted sales were “incremental and would never have happened without the discount”.
