You have to feel sorry for Sam Adams. Having bagged the number one spot on the iTunes hip-hop chart with his debut album Boston’s Boy, without a major label deal, he’s been facing questions about whether he rigged the chart by buying most of the 8,000 downloads himself. This, despite the fact that you’d need 8,000 individual iTunes accounts to do so. Billboard reports that Nielsen SoundScan data backs Adams up. But there is an interesting (legit) story here: Adams has less than 1,000 MySpace friends but over 25,000 Facebook friends and 2,000 Twitter followers – but perhaps more importantly, his I Hate College track has been a big hit on YouTube with more than one million views.
