We reported on last week’s EU report on the impact of piracy across Europe, but Music Week has been doing some number-crunching to figure out the effects in the UK specifically. Cross-referencing the EU report with data from Creative and Cultural Skills, the trade mag reckons that “there could be as many as 9,600 job losses within the music industry over the next five years”. The finding will be thrown into the current debate around the UK’s Digital Economy Bill, naturally. “If there was ever the proof needed to demonstrate why the Digital Economy Bill is imperative for the protection of our creative industries, this is it,” says TUC general secretary Brenden Barber.
