When she spoke at MidemNet, artist Amanda Palmer made not-so-veiled hints that she would soon be severing her relationship with label Roadrunner Records. Well, that relationship is now severed – although we suspect that the feeling was mutual. Anyway, Palmer says she’s now planning to investigate new fan-donation based payment models for distributing her music. She’s kicking off with a free track offered through Bandcamp, although she’s inviting fans to donate. “i think that artists should feel no shame while passing the hat around once they’ve entertained a crowd of people,” she writes. “it’s been a huge and obvious irony that i have been legally unable to ask for money for my music, since it’s been verboten by my contract with roadrunner.” It’ll be interesting to see what she comes up with in the months ahead.
