Ever wondered how all these albums leak before their official release? There’s a variety of reasons, but the latest is an embarrassment for promotional service Play MPE. It seems a teenager signed up for the service – which distributes files to journalists, radio stations and other media ahead of their release – claiming to be a music critic. He then figured out how to access a host of new albums, download their WAV files and uploaded them to BitTorrent tracker What.cd. And then – oh, the foolishness of youth – boasted about his exploits on forums, leading Play MPE to discover what he’d been up to, and ban him. Artists including the Black Keys, Macy Gray, Hole and The Gaslight Anthem are thought to have been affected. Source: CNET
