A group of copyright owners has filed an amicus brief supporting Viacom in its copyright infringement lawsuit against YouTube, including US collecting societies ASCAP and BMI. The brief makes three main claims: that the Digital Millennium Copyright Act was created to fight piracy, not protect it; that courts shouldn’t let websites that “intentionally encourage infringement” hide behind the DMCA; and that sites making a financial profit from infringement should be liable if they don’t take measures to control such activities.
