US government planning crackdown on overseas piracy sites

You won’t find Barack Obama trumpeting the ‘war on terror’, but how about a war on online piracy? The US government is planning to ramp up its pressure on foreign countries with big piracy sites, including China and Russia. “This is theft, clear and simple,” said vice president Joe Biden yesterday. “It’s smash and grab, no different than a guy walking down Fifth Avenue and smashing the window at Tiffany’s and reaching in and grabbing what’s in the window.” Movie and games industry bodies have welcomed the news. “As we shine the spotlight on foreign governments that have rogue actors doing illicit business within their borders, it’s the government’s responsibility to respond,” said Biden.
