Research firm The Mobile World claims there are five billion mobile connections, a milestone that was passed in the first week of July 2010. The total reached 4.82 billion at the end of Q1 2010. It also estimates that China and India alone added 50 million new mobile subscribers in April and May, with other emerging markets like Brazil, Russia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Mexico and Iran also growing strongly. Of the 168 million new mobile subs in Q1, the established G7 nations accounted for just 4.6%. It’s stats like these that are fuelling the interest in mobile music services in these emerging markets, which often have relatively undeveloped online music services.
