Dutch anti-piracy group BREIN has announced that its legal action has been responsible for shutting down 422 “illegal websites” in the first half of 2010 alone. 384 of them were torrent sites, 29 were sites linking to online storage services like RapidShare, six were streaming sites, five were Usenet indexers, and one was an FTP server. The pro-P2P blog TorrentFreak is decidely unhappy about this “torrent site carnage” – most of its post reporting the news is self-flagellation about failing to have noticed or reported on the takedowns. BREIN conducts much of its work for the movie industry rather than music, and was one of the bodies targeting The Pirate Bay with legal action last year.
