NPD Group claims that 23.5 million PC games were bought in US stores last year, only narrowly ahead of the 21.3 million that were downloaded from digital stores like Steam. Downloads are expected to overtake physical sales this year. However, what the numbers don’t show are the levels of piracy. When Music Ally went to games industry conference Develop recently, US games publishers talked about eye-watering levels of piracy for PC games – albeit not quite as high as the IFPI’s claimed 95% piracy rate for music downloads.
