Amazon has implemented Facebook Connect on its website, enabling users to connect their Amazon and Facebook accounts. Amazon says specifically that it won’t share people’s purchasing details with their friends, or spam those friends with marketing messages. Instead, the feature lets Amazon tap into the movies, music and other products that a user has said they like in their Facebook profile, and serve up recommendations accordingly. Amazon will also let people browse upcoming birthdays of their friends, and suggest products that they might like based on their profile information, if available. The data will complement Amazon’s existing data on what people have purchased on its own site, which has thus far been the basis of its recommendations.
