MP3tunes’ Michael Robertson has discovered that Apple has already launched a cloud music service. The latest update to its iDisk online storage service – v1.2 – includes the ability to “play audio from your iDisk while using another app”. Users have to upload tracks to iDisk one-by-one, but can then stream them to multiple devices, including computers, iPhones, iPod touches and iPads. “Apple’s service allows unlimited sharing (no username or password required) and now background streaming – all without a license from the record labels,” he blogs. “Their recent actions are defying UMG’s position that any streaming service requires a license.”
