A startling survey from Tokyo research firm BCN claims that Sony’s range of Walkman digital music players outsold Apple’s iPods in Japan during the month of August. It claims Sony took a 47.8% share of the portable music player market, compared to Apple’s 44%. CNET points out that Sony overtaking Apple happened in the run-up to the latter’s announcement of new iPods, which is likely to have slowed sales in the weeks beforehand. Still, the fact that Sony is close enough to overtake for that month is a contrast to many other big music markets.
