While Spotify still maintains that it will launch in the US this year, US tech sites continue to dig into the reasons why it’s taking so long. CNET has a new and startling angle, claiming that Apple is actively dissuading labels from striking US deals with the streaming music service. “In meetings in Los Angeles recently, Apple executives told their music industry counterparts that they had serious doubts about whether Spotify’s business model could ever generate significant revenues or profits,” claims the piece, citing two sources. It goes on to suggest that Apple has also suggested that if Spotify launches in its free version, it could nevertheless cannibalise paid music sales elsewhere.
