Nielsen has published some data on how US teenagers are using their mobile phones. Unsurprisingly, the key finding is that they’re texting. Lots. The average US teen sends and receives 3,339 texts a month – a figure that rises to 4,050 for teenage girls. Text messaging is now the biggest reason teenagers get a mobile phone, ahead of ‘safety’. However, the report also finds that apps and data usage are growing significantly in the 13-17 age group. Their monthly mobile data usage has increased from an average of 14MB a year ago to 62MB now, and they are downloading an increasing range of apps too. Pandora is cited as one of the most popular.
