Informa Telecoms & Media has published research carried out with Spotify, which puts numbers to the streaming music opportunity for European mobile operators. Using data supplied by Spotify and Swedish operator Telia, Informa estimates that a Western European operator with 20 million customers could make €77.7 million in 2011 alone by partnering with a streaming music service. And if the biggest operator in each Western European market did it, the total revenues would be €1.1 billion next year. “Music download stores which operators launched prolifically over the last 5 years are commodities and had little impact on core business metrics,” says Spotify’s director of European business development Adrian Blair. “Streaming services, by contrast, have proved an effective way to differentiate from the competition and win new customers… Over half of Spotify/Telia customers said they were more likely to stick with Telia as a result of the Spotify partnership.”
