Shazam has been feted for the amount of digital track sales that its apps are generating – the company told us just before Christmas that between 250,000 and 300,000 songs are sold a day through being tagged in Shazam. However, a new deal builds on that. Shazam has partnered with Spotify to add a feature called ‘Play in Spotify’ to its iPhone and Android apps, allowing users to stream tagged songs in the Spotify app, rather than buy them. Shazam CEO Andrew Fisher talks about a “seamless experience for music fans at the point of inspiration in any location”. What will be interesting will be whether this is just the first of several deals with streaming services – it’s certainly a good deal for Spotify. Some rightsholders, however, may have mixed feelings about one of the world’s top referrers for download sales pointing users towards a streaming alternative. Source: Shazam
