Apple boss Steve Jobs has announced in an email to staff that he has been granted “a medical leave of absence so I can focus on my health”. No further details of Jobs’ condition have been given, but suffice to say the blogosphere is full of speculation that his pancreatic cancer may have returned. In the email, Jobs says he will “continue as CEO and be involved in major strategic decisions for the company”, while COO Tim Cook will handle day-to-day operations. The email’s closing sentence is markedly less bullish than Jobs’ comments last time he took a leave of absence like this, though. “I love Apple so much and hope to be back as soon as I can.” The announcement appeared to be strategically timed on a public holiday in the US, and a day before Apple reveals what are expected to be storming Q4 financials.
