US metallers Severed Fifth have been talking about their new approach, which they’re calling ‘Open Band’. Taking its cue from the open source software movement, this involves giving music away for free, building a community around it, getting fans involved in helping the band out, and encouraging donations via PayPal. Fans have already created a fanzine for Severed Fifth, while also setting up their Facebook and Twitter presences, and acting as a street team. An 11-track demo is available for free under a Creative Commons licence, while the band have raised $3,000 of a planned $5,000 to record an album.
