Spotify’s negotiations with US labels have another hurdle to surmount: an interview given by biz dev boss Faisal Galaria to US site StrategyEye. It includes the claim that Spotify will “quickly outpace the competition” in the US, and refers to speculation about Apple lobbying the labels to restrict Spotify’s launch there. “Put yourself into their shoes for a moment – you’re a nice, fat big executive at label X, Y, Z. You’re getting half a million dollars a year as long as you hit your bonus. Your bonus means that 80% of your revenues comes from iTunes. Are you going to tell iTunes where to go?” True or not, the interview’s publication is the worst possible timing for Spotify, as it continues to negotiate with the US labels. “No one from Spotify has spoken to StrategyEye since early December and the comments made in that interview were taken massively out of context,” says Spotify in a statement provided to Music Ally.
