Previously, its revenue model was based on percentage of sales and it had selective criteria, aiming its service at ‘business level’ clients. For example to qualify an act had to have an email list of at least 5,000 emails. From next month Topspin will offer a $9.99 subscription service which allows users access to its suite of previously exclusive D2C tools. Topspin is also promising new features alongside the launch of the public tier. The move will disrupt the crowded D2C landscape and put Topspin directly in competition with platforms like Reverbnation and Bandcamp. It is also an admission that the great unwashed are now worthy. Previously some of Topspin’s tool suite may have been deemed too advanced or unnecessary for grass-roots promotion.
