If you’re following the rows around Apple’s new subscription rules for iOS, there’s been an intriguing twist. A developer emailed Apple CEO Steve Jobs to ask about whether ‘software as a service’ [SaaS] companies like SalesForce would be included in the new rules, and got this reply: “We created subscriptions for publishing apps, not SaaS apps”. The response actually provokes more questions: do music services like Spotify, Rhapsody, Rdio and the rest count as publishing apps, or SaaS? Jobs’ reply raises the possibility that they won’t have to give up 30% of revenues from customers signing up on iOS devices after all. But until further music-specific clarification comes from Apple, the industry will not know for sure.
Do Apple’s new subscription rules really apply to music?
