Apple has filed for a trademark on the word ‘Places’, with the application hinting at plans for a social location service. One of the categories covered by the application is ‘Online social networking services; providing a social networking website; assisting in the locating of people using a global positioning system (GPS)’. Apple’s choice of the word ‘Places’ should throw up some fun though, given that Facebook Places and Google Places already exist – the first is a social location service that lets people check in to real-world venues, while the second is Google’s database of locations, which is used by a number of services.
