A survey commissioned by the Australian Content Industry Group claims that in 2010, 4.7 million Aussies accessed online films, TV shows, music and other content illegally. The report also claims that piracy cost the music, film, TV, software and games industries AU$900 million in 2010, and predicts this will rise to $5.2 billion by 2016 (based on 6.5 million pirates), meaning $18 billion of lost revenues between 2010 and 2016. These kinds of calculations are always controversial, given the difficulty of figuring out how many pirated downloads would have been a sale.
