US performance rights body SoundExchange says it paid out $252 million in royalties in 2010, taking it past the $600 million mark overall for payments from webcasting, satellite radio, TV and streaming services. SoundExchange says the average payment per artist rose 80% to $2,800 last year, while for rightsholders it jumped 39% to more than $14,000. “These revenues are an industry success story, hinging on the collaboration of artists, copyright holders, streaming services, and the committed SoundExchange team,” says new president Michael Huppe. SoundExchange’s efforts to sign up more artists appear to be paying off too: 11,000 new artists and rightsholders registered in 2010, double that of 2009.
