Mobile developer Rovio has announced that its Angry Birds games have now been downloaded more than 140 million times – a figure that includes both paid and free versions of the mobile games. The franchise passed the 100 million mark in March, so the rate of downloads appears to be accelerating rather than slowing down – helped by the release of a new spin-off Angry Birds game based on the movie Rio. We’ll make this mischievous point: in terms of reach, Angry Birds has now outstripped Michael Jackson’s Thriller in terms of the number of ‘units’ distributed legally to consumers, although obviously on revenues there is no comparison. Anyway, Rovio is now targeting China as the next big growth area for its feathery franchise. “We are now in the top three for the most copied brand in China,” said Rovio’s Peter Vesterbacka at the Global Mobile Internet conference in Beijing. “We are up there with Disney and Hello Kitty.”Read more:
