Mobile developer Rovio has announced that its Angry Birds games have now been downloaded more than 140 million times – a figure that includes both paid and free versions of the mobile games. The franchise passed the 100 million mark in March, so the rate of downloads appears to be accelerating rather than slowing down – helped by the release of a new spin-off Angry Birds game based on the movie Rio. We’ll make this mischievous point: in terms of reach, Angry Birds has now outstripped Michael Jackson’s Thriller in terms of the number of ‘units’ distributed legally to consumers, although obviously on revenues there is no comparison.
