Openness and APIs are increasingly common themes for some of the most interesting companies in the digital music ecosystem. The latest evidence is a partnership between US streaming music service Rdio and music technology startup The Echo Nest. The pair are blending their APIs, enabling developers making music apps to include full streams from Rdio’s catalogue (for subscribers), and 30-second samples for everyone else. “We think that the combination of Rdio’s deep catalog with the deep Echo Nest music data will open the door to some amazing music applications,” says Echo Nest’s blog post, which goes on to moot one example of a ‘Pandora-style radio on top of Rdio’ which could be built using the APIs. Apps built on top of the Rdio API will also be able to make their developers money, with an affiliate fee for everyone who signs up for Rdio through an app. Source: The Echo Nest
