Google gave out a bunch of stats yesterday at its I/O conference on the growth of Android, saying that it is currently activating 400,000 new Android devices every day, with 100 million activated Android devices out in the wild. There are now 200,000 free and paid apps in the Android Market store, and 4.5 billion apps have been downloaded and installed by users. Alongside the stats, Google unveiled the next version of the Android OS – 3.1 (or Ice Cream Sandwich, to give it its codename). The new version will run across smartphones and tablets. Finally, Google has launched a movie rental service on Android Market, and agreed guidelines for how quickly its OS updates will be pushed out to customers of various operators and handset makers.
