A group of independent app developers found themselves on the wrong end of patent infringement lawsuit threats on Friday, bizarrely for their use of Apple’s in-app payment system. “They seem to be effectively claiming the rights to in-app purchase, but going after me, not Apple… On Friday 13th no less,” tweeted one of the developers, James Thomson. Several reports have named the company as Lodsys, which owns a patent for ‘Methods and systems for gathering information from units of a commodity across a network” dating back to 1992. The developers are being asked to pay licensing fees to avoid being sued. As yet, Apple has made no public statement on the threatening letters, although if there is any merit in the patent, it would also affect developers on other platforms such as BlackBerry and Android.
