It’s got extracts from an academic paper by Spotify’s Gunnar Kreitz and Fredrik Niemela explaining how the service works. Some of the standout stuff: only 8.8% of music is streamed directly from Spotify’s servers, with 35.8% coming from the company’s peer-to-peer network, and 55.4% from users’ local caches. Meanwhile, in a week-long analysis of music played on Spotify, they found that 88% of track accesses were for the most popular 12% of tracks, although 60% of all music content available was accessed at least once.
